Kali’s Story

#FreeKaliPenn: Help Save the Life of an Autistic Teen Wrongly Accused of Murder

Meet Kali Jovan Penn, an 18-year-old with Autism and no history of violence. Kali is a loving brother, son, and dog owner who faced a tragic situation in March 2023.

In an altercation with his aunt Tashina, who had a troubling history of abuse allegations, Kali sustained defensive stab wounds on his hands, requiring medical attention. Reports suggest that Tashina had a history of grievances filed against her abusing disabled adults and animals, underscoring the need for a thorough investigation into her background.

Growing up, Kali witnessed extreme domestic violence towards his mother by his father, which has deeply impacted him. As a result, Kali has a strong aversion to violence, making it unlikely that he would instigate such a tragic event.

The State of Oklahoma charged Kali with first-degree murder with deliberate intent, despite strong indications of self-defense.  He was found competent to aid in his own defense and stand trial.

Experienced attorneys with a national reputation in trying cases and representing people with autism spectrum disorders believe that the competency evaluation was inadequate to determine his abilities.

To secure justice for Kali, approximately $180,000 must be raised to pay for a new legal team including experts and investigators. Kali has been incarcerated since March 2023, facing a $5,000,000 bond, a burden his family cannot bear alone.

Kali’s mother is currently recovering from brain surgery due to past domestic violence injuries she sustained and is learning to walk again. Kali’s mother fully supports him and is ready for him to come home.
